This walk takes in the confluence of the Hodder, Calder and Ribble. Arrive along the B6243 from Hurst Green in one direction or Whalley the other. Our destination is Lower Hodder Bridge (Shown on map), there is some parking at the Whalley side of the bridge or at the entrance to Knowle Brow, which leads off the B6243 on the Hurst Green side.

Walk across the bridge and walk up the road for about 400m to a stile ( left ), almost opposite is a bus shelter. Aim for another stile at the other end of the field, over this stile then across the field to a red brick barn. Through an iron kissing gate, then another to the left of the barn. Turn left down the minor road, through the farm at the bottom ( we now follow the signposted Ribble Way ) and on to the banks of the Ribble. The confluences of the Ribble with the Hodder then Calder gives an opportunity to see Sand Martins which nest in the banks by the confluence.

We follow the bank of the river until the large pipe crossing, just after this a small stream joins the river. Take the path which follows the stream up the hill ( path marked by arrows ). We come upon a barn, pass to the left of the barn to a stile, from here head for Cross Gills Farm. Through the farm to the main road, cross over this and follow the track past a row of cottages to Stonyhurst College cricket pitch. Follow the track straight on, across a field which leads to the road, cross straight over and follow the track. An arrow indicate sthe footpath, over a stile, continue along the edge of the wood to a wooden stile on the left. Over the stile and continue along the side of the wood until the steps which lead down to a wooden footbridge. We soon join the River Hodder and continue down back to Lower Hodder Bridge.

Map1 above shows Lower Hodder Bridge, walk up the road to the first red diamond, then follow the footpath to Winkley Hall then to the farm.
Map 2 above shows the path from the farm then along the banks of the Ribble until we get to Lambing Clough. Turn right here along the side of the beck then skirt the wood to Cross Gills. Cross the main road and head for Hall Barn Farm.
